Multiple Car Dealerships are Burglarized
On May 1, it was reported that 46 cars (over $1 million worth) were stolen from 12 different dealerships in North Carolina. The first car was stolen mid-March. Police revealed that there are 19 suspects: all minors between 9-16 years old. All but 6 of the vehicles have been recovered. On May 4, it was reported that 373 employees at Triumph Food have tested positive for coronavirus, though all were asymptomatic. Triumph is a pork packaging plant, and has been added to the list of food places that have seen an outbreak, leading to a concern about a shortage of food. (CNN)

Coronavirus Updates
On May 1, the governor of New Mexico declared a state of emergency due to coronavirus. The declaration closes roads to the city Gallup in an attempt to stop the spread. On May 2, the FDA approved the use of Ebola drug remdesivir to combat coronavirus. (CNN)

Murder Hornets Spotted in the US
On May 4, a highly venomous and invasive hornet species, dubbed “Murder Hornets,” have been spotted in the US. The hornets originated in Asia, but have now been spotted in Washington state. They have been killing the already dying bee population in the state. The hornets are longer than two inches, and if stung multiple times, a human can die from the sting. (CNN)

Coronavirus Updates (2)
On May 4, an anonymous donation of $1 million was given to a Santa Cruz, California hospital. The donation is going towards bonuses for staff members helping with coronavirus. On May 16, for the first time in its 115-year history, New York City shut down all subway systems. The MTA was shut down so that it could be deep cleaned in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus. On May 8, it was announced that the IRS added an option for people to add their bank account information and receive the stimulus payment virtually. However, a glitch has left many people without their stimulus payment and no information on when they will receive it. On May 9, it was revealed that various White House staff have tested positive for coronavirus. Vice President Mike Pence’s aid and President Trump’s personal valet are the two names who have been released. (CNN/BBC)

Coronavirus Updates (3)
On May 11, at least two teams of Doctors Without Borders were dispatched to New Mexico to help Native Americans curb coronavirus. As of now, DWB is helping the Navajo Nation learn care techniques and create facilities. On May 12, the Broadway League announced that all New York Broadway shows will be cancelled until September 6. On May 13, it was announced that various California universities may not return in the Fall. The California State University system is already planning to cancel all in-person fall classes to slow the spread of coronavirus. On May 13, Twitter announced that it will allow all employees to work from home forever due to the success of working from home during coronavirus. (CNN)

Shooting in Texas
On May 11, around 600 people gathered in a Fort Worth park to watch fireworks. As the fireworks began, gunshots rang out. At least five people have been injured. Police are looking for leads regarding the suspect. In South Dakota, Sioux Tribes are refusing to move checkpoints they’ve set up to protect their land from coronavirus. South Dakota Governor Noem wrote to the tribes saying the checkpoints are illegal, but the tribe firmly believes it is the only way to protect their reservations. (CNN/BBC)

State Department Inspector General Fired
On May 16, President Trump fired Steve Linick, the State Department Inspector General. President Trump stated Linick will be removed in the next 30 days because he no longer has the President’s full confidence. Linick had previously begun investigating Mike Pompeo for abuse of power while in office. (BBC)

Shooting in Louisiana
On May 17, it was reported that there was a shooting at a memorial in Louisiana the night before. Thirteen people were injured in the shooting. The memorial for Dominique James had 800 people at one point. Police say shots continued to ring out even after they arrived and the scene was chaotic. They are urging people to come forward with information. (CNN)

Coronavirus Updates (4)
On May 18, California announced a new relief bill for undocumented immigrants. The bill allows undocumented immigrants to apply for financial relief during the pandemic. On May 23, it was reported that the number of deaths had come closer to 100,000 as various areas of the US began to open up. (CNN)

Coronavirus Updates (5)
On May 24, the CDC warned that there may be increased rodent sightings since restaurants are closed. Rats especially have been sighted more as they struggle to find food sources aside from restaurant dumpsters. On May 24, President Trump issued a travel ban against Brazil due to the country’s rise in coronavirus cases. On May 30, a new study was published stating that 1 out of 10 coronavirus patients with diabetes die within the first week. On May 30, President Trump announced he is cutting US ties with the World Health Organization, claiming the WHO is a “puppet of China”. President Trump has stated that the WHO needs to hold China accountable for the coronavirus. (CNN/BBC)

Black Lives Matter Protest
On May 26, hundreds of people in Minneapolis gathered at the intersection where George Floyd died. Floyd was being arrested after police were called for a potential forgery in progress. During the arrest, an officer placed his knee on Floyd’s neck, not moving it after Floyd said he couldn’t breathe. Floyd died later at the hospital. Four officers have been fired due to the incident. Protesters have gathered around Minneapolis, highlighting the #blacklivesmatter movement. By May 31, protests erupted in cities all around America. Curfews have been placed in cities and the National Guard has been deployed, but protests have continued. Various peaceful protests have led to clashes with the police, resulting in riots and looting. Various buildings have been caught on fire, as well. On May 30, in Detroit’s protest, an unknown suspect shot at the crowd, killing a 21-year-old male protester. (CNN)
