- On July 25, 2016, Verizon Wireless, the telecommunications company, purchases Yahoo Inc. for $4.8 billion. Four years ago Marissa Mayer, a former Google employee, took over Yahoo! in the hopes of turning the company's steady decline around, which has not happened. Verizon, who also purchased AOL last year, hopes to combine Yahoo's core business with their broadband technologies.
