Karur

Karur kəro͞orˈ [key], city (1991 pop. 113,669), Tamil Nadu state, S central India. Milled rice, cotton fabrics, and brassware are the city's chief products. According to Hindu legend, Brahma began the work of creation in Karur, which is referred to as the “place of the sacred cow.” Upon the dissolution of the Hindu Vijayanagar empire in 1565, Karur fell to the Naik kings of Madurai. The British occupied the city in 1760.
