Brewer's: Codds

Codgers. Thackeray says, “The Cistercian lads call the poor brethren of the Charterhouse codds, ” adding, “but I know not wherefore.” (Turkish, kodjah, an old man or woman.) We say “Well, old boy,” without referring to age.
