Thursday, March 21, 2024 – A study has determined that a severe heatwave that occurred in West Africa in February was intensified by 4 degrees Celsius and was 10 times more probable due to anthropogenic global warming. The heat had a significant impact on millions of individuals; however, the precise number of premature fatalities or instances of disease remains uncertain due to insufficient reporting.

The hottest days were from February 11 to 15, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius and average 36. Humidity was also excessive, making it difficult for people to cool down by sweating. The heat index, a measure that combines temperature and humidity to represent how heat feels, was 50°C.

Farmers in Ivory Coast reported in February that high temperatures and a lack of rain were harming their crops. According to Reuters, large cocoa mills in Ghana and other West African countries halted or slowed processing in March as the price of cocoa beans has increased to an unprecedented high of more than $8,000 a tonne, more than three times the price in March 2020.
