Brewer's: Ceelict

(St.) or St. Calixtus, whose day is the 14th of October, the day of the Battle of Hastings. Brown Willis tells us there was a tablet once in Battle parish church with these words:

This place of war is Battle called, because in battle here Quite conquered and o'erthrown the English nation were.  This slaughter happenëd to them upon St. Ceelict's day,

etc.
