Hiring Slows, but Unemployment Falls in September (Oct. 22): After being delayed for over two weeks because of the government shutdown, the September jobs report is released. The U.S. economy adds just 148,000 jobs in September. That is less than the 169,000 jobs added in August and less than the monthly average over the last year. However, those 148,000 jobs are enough to lower the unemployment rate from 7.3 percent in August to 7.2 percent in September.
