Impressive from start to finish on How I Do, Philadelphia singer Res (it's pronounced like “Reese”) sure sounds like one of the most impressive new artists of the year.
Her knockout debut disc offers a wild array of styles, from old school soul and shimmering R&B—think Chaka Khan or more recently Lauryn Hill—to echoes of hip-hop, dancehall, and rock 'n' roll. That span is not surprising, given the singer's eclectic musical background, which included everything from listening to Marvin Gaye and Pearl Jam to singing Italian arias while taking voice lessons for five years as a teenager.
The album's lead single, “Golden Boys,” has a staggered kick to it, and there's a sumptuous R&B groove in other cuts like “700 Mile Situation” or the song of disengagement “Sittin' Back.”
Res brings all her influences together brilliantly on the set's infectious centerpiece “They-Say Vision,” which features some of her strongest singing, and she throws in a raging rocker called “Say It Anyway,” as a hidden bonus track at the end of the disc.
