There's probably no way around the fact that Dave Grohl may forever be referred to as an ex-member of Nirvana.
But since the debut of his new group Foo Fighters in 1995, Grohl has done a lot to define the rest of his life. Like the Fighters previous two albums, There Is Nothing Left to Lose is intensely melodic, but unlike its predecessor it doesn't get bogged down in overly predictable loud-soft dynamics.
Songs here, like the propulsive album opener “Stacked Actors” and the buzzing lead single “Learn to Fly” ride on power riffs and drummer Taylor Hawkins' throttling beats. There's sheer exuberance in other tracks, such as the punk-charged “Breakout” or the set's musical centerpiece “Generator,” while cuts like the guitar-humming beauty “Aurora” and the Lennon-esque “Ain't It the Life” show Grohl's got an equally impressive softer side.
In spite of a series of personnel changes, Foo Fighters get better each time out, and this album is their best yet.
