Hanks's writing/directing is a pleasantly nostalgic look back to 1960s pop culture. That Thing You Do! emerges as an enjoyable, lightweight romp that follows the rise of an Erie, Pennsylvania, Beatle-esque pop band, the Wonders, from playing high-school dances to being courted and signed by a savvy agent (Hanks). The film captures the unbridled optimism of a young band on the verge of stardom as they play the state fairgrounds, hear themselves on the radio for the first time and climb the Billboard charts. Some of Tyler's saccharine lines will make you cringe, but she proves to be a good sport, maintaining an innocent charm throughout.
