It's hard to tell whether Summer Catch crowds in plots and characters out of ambition or insecurity. Freddie Prinze, Jr. stars as a blue-collar kid who gets into the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball league—a possible route to the Major Leagues. Ryan's the only local boy to have done so in a while; he just lost his mother; his older brother had a shot at sports fame but lost it; he's a live wire and his own worst enemy; and he just began dating the daughter (Jessica Biel) of the Boston blue blood who lords about town. Ryan's teammate (Matthew Lillard) has his own host of side plots. Each element is standard movie material, but the enthusiastic mix-n-match yields something blandly chaotic. The sum total is a summer-sports-romance-buddy flick of dubious quality.
