A handful of excellent ghetto comedies have provided antidote to the glum naturalism of Boyz 'n the Hood-style dramas. Friday was one of them, and Chris Tucker reveled in a hilarious role that kickstarted his career. Next Friday loses the crisp pacing and vignette humor of its predecessor, devolving into a misogynist romp through potty humor and played-out playa gags.
Ice Cube stars as Craig, a young black man whose father sends him out of South Central L.A. for the relative safety of the suburbs. Here Craig finds even more trouble, mostly in the form of enraged, promiscuous females and Latino gangbangers.
