Burton reaches for the stars, trying to capture 1950s nostalgic cheese, but is sent back to Earth with a big-budget misfire. There's no question the director has a soft spot for Ed Wood's sci-fi schlock, but Mars Attacks! lacks the innocence that made the originals so much fun. The result is a tastelessly weird, sometimes funny film that will attract young audiences but scare the hell out of them. The film begs comparisons to Independence Day, but where ID4 was pretty much violence free, the Martians here go on murderous sprees. They arrive in hubcaps, and instead of decimating New York, Washington or Los Angeles, the invaders from the red planet go after Vegas. At least they have taste.
