After making an impressive splash upon the pop scene with their first album in 1998, the Latin all-star collective known as Los Super Seven has gotten even stronger the second time around.
Los Super Seven are now more like Los Super eight, having added one of the best singers in the business, Raul Malo of the Mavericks. The ensemble also includes stars such as David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, country singer Rick Trevino, and Ruben Ramos of the Tejano Orquestra.
Taking turns on lead vocals, they weave through a mix of styles from various Pan-Latin countries, including Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. With the exception of the half-hearted “Qualquem Coisa,” which features Brazilian Grammy winner Caetano Veloso on vocals, most of the set is a pure, percussive joy. Ramos leads a particularly sizzling “Compay Gato” and Hidalgo's “Teresa” has a sparkling laid-back groove. But Malo's romantic “Siboney” and ultra-smooth “Me Voy Pa' Pueblo” shine so brightly they leave one wishing he'd taken the lead a few more times on this thoroughly entertaining collection.
