Up-and-comer Phillippe plays a small-town 19-year-old rebel who abhors his abusive father (Savage) and desires his washed-up but sexy mother (Kinski). Phillippe and Savage give stellar performances but this heavy plot, weighed down by family dysfunction and deranged characters, is slow and disjointed.
