A powerfully complex character study packaged in a psychological thriller. A bitter custody battle is the center of this keen observance of British views on divorce, homosexuality and child custody. Nine-year-old Oliver (Bould) lies about his scars when questioned by his doctor-father, Martyn (Donovan). Suspecting that Oliver's mother's boyfriend, Frank (Flemyng), beats the boy, Martyn seeks custody of Oliver. Oliver's mother, Hannah (Richardson), who doesn't believe Frank is responsible for the beatings until she walks in on one, uses Martyn's homosexuality against him in court and lies about Frank. The sharply drawn characters make this an unsettling tale that lingers long after you leave the theater.
