To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday
Gemma La Mana/Triumph Films
Two years after his wife's death, grief still paralyzes David Lewis (Gallagher). Each night, he talks to Gillian and pretends she is there on the beach with him, frolicking in the waves. His daughter, Rachel (Danes), has fared much better but has trouble dealing with her father's odd behavior. David, Rachel and their family have gathered on Nantucket to commemorate what would have been Gillian's 37th birthday. Gillian's sister, Esther (Baker) and her husband (Altman) hope to pull David out of his funk, and maybe even get him interested in other women. David resists, and the weekend becomes an anger- and resentment-filled outing. David's love for Gillian and his refusal to let her go is played out tragically, not sentimentally, which saves the film from mawkishness.
