Frequency is something special. Not only does it revolve around an adult son communicating with his long-dead father via shortwave radio, it's also a serial killer mystery and a tearjerker and a quaint slice-of-life flick about 1960s Queens, held together by Back to the Future-inspired time-travel slippage. "How many movies does your movie have?" it seems to taunt.

Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel star as the generally impossible father-son duo. The strength of the movie rests on their talent at eliciting emotion. As a strangely sentimental film sweeping in on the coattails of The Sixth Sense and infused with nostalgia's shimmering gauze, Frequency is a success. But the moment you start to apply any sort of logic to what is actually happening, the magic comes tumbling down.
