Gilliam's adaptation of Thompson's 1971 novel about psychedelic drugs is certainly true to its source. The road-tripping adventures of Raoul Duke (Depp) and his lawyer Dr. Gonzo (Del Toro) are captured at a frenetic pace with mind-bending visual effects. Depp goes beyond his usual bounds of oddball comedy here; this film is a dark, foul journey into the underbelly of middle-America's dreams of Las Vegas leisure.
