A few years ago American guitarist Ry Cooder searched the backstreets of Havana to assemble a band of near-forgotten living legends, several of whom hadn't sung or touched an instrument in more than a decade. The album resulting from this reunion session rose into worldwide popularity, garnering a 1997 Grammy for the Cuban/Latin Jazz ensemble known as the Buena Vista Social Club.
Interview footage, scenes of Havana life, and concert shots from Amsterdam and New York combine to form a delightful portrait of the contagious and rejuvenating power of music. From shining shoes in the faded grandeur of Cuba's capital city to unleashing their virtuoso talents in Carnegie Hall, the path these superabuelos of Cuban music have taken is nothing short of incredible; their passion for life contagious.
