Edward Said
Age: 67scholar and literary critic who championed a Palestinian homeland and railed against U.S. and Israeli policy toward Palestinians and Arab nations. In his book Orientalism, Said argued the relationship between the West and East is one of “power, of domination of varying degrees of a complex hegemony,” with the West using colonization to dominate and demean the East. He taught comparative literature at Columbia University.
