The ATP and WTA held their first annual joint Awards Gala at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach on March 19, 1997. The ceremonies were hosted by comedian Dennis Miller and raised over $120,000 with all proceeds going to the Ashe-Buchholz Tennis Center and the greater Miami Partnership for the Homeless. Voting was done by a selection of worldwide media.
