Hong Kong Protests Continue to Worsen
On October 2, as people in Beijing began to celebrate their National Day, they seemed completely unaware of the turmoil taking place in Hong Kong. On the same day, one protestor in Hong Kong was shot by police, in the first turn of violence during the 17-week-long protest. On October 6, protests became even more violent after the banning of face masks during demonstrations. That same day, a taxi driver mowed down protestors, and a man was beaten bloody by a mob. (CNN)

North Korea Launches Missile
On October 3, North Korea said it tested a new submarine ballistic missile just a day after agreeing with Washington to resume nuclear talks. The US and North Korea are set to continue talks on October 4. (CNN)

Baghdad Imposes Curfew
On October 3, after two days of anti-government protestors and security forces clashes, Baghdad has imposed a curfew. Seven people have died and hundreds more have been wounded during the violence. (BBC)

Four People Stabbed in Paris
On October 6, a man stabbed four people in Paris, claiming radical Islam as the reason. Anti-terror investigators took over the case on October 5. (BBC)

Protesters in France
On October 6, large crowds of protestors flooded the streets of Paris after a bill was proposed allowing single women and lesbian couples access to fetility/IVF treatments. The bill will face the Senate later this month. (BBC)

Violent Protests in Ecuador
On October 8, Ecuador’s president announced he and his government will move away from the capital amid the violent protests. The military has already had to rescue 50 members who were being held hostage by protesters. The protests have been going on for five days and are due to the president’s economic reform. (CNN)

Shooting Near German Synagogue
On October 9, a gunman killed 2 people and injured more on an attack at an East German synagogue. The attack was on one of the holiest Jewish days and is expected to have been an antisemetic attack. The 27-year-old suspect streamed the attack live on Twitch and has been arrested. (CNN)

Ground Offensive Launched in Syria
On October 9, Turkey launched a ground offensive in Northern Syria. The EU has urged Turkey to end it’s offensive. (BBC)

Ethiopian Prime Minister Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
On October 11, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Ahmed has helped end his country’s 20 year war with Eritrea. (CNN)

State of Emergency in Chile
On October 19, Chile’s president declared a state of emergency over the riots. Hundreds have taken to the streets to protest the rise of public transfer fees. On October 21, three more people died in a supermarket fire during the protests. (CNN)

Bangladesh Riot Over Facebook Post
On October 21, four people died in Bangladesh after police fired into a crowd of rioters. The riot was caused by an offensive Facebook post. The poster claims his account was hacked. (CNN)

Deadly Protests in Ethiopia
On October 26, protests in Ethiopia entered their third day after a Facebook post from Mohammad stating police were conspiring to kill him. So far, 69 people have died during these protests and another 200 have been injured. (CNN)
