Tell us about your work -- what do you do? Psychotherapist -- counseling in the mental health and chemical dependency field. What skills are needed? Counseling skills -- individual, group, marriage, children and adolescent. What was your major? Social Work How did you get started in your career? Volunteer work with college-age people who had family or chemical dependency problems. What experience do you need in this job? Master's level or PhD degree. 3000 hours of certified practice and yearly on-going education. A state license is also necessary. Describe your "typical" workday: Fairly long day of counseling clients, meetings, and paperwork. What is the hardest aspect of your job? The paperwork required including charting, letters, treatment plans. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Though not very common -- seeing people make progress or expressing gratitude for their progress. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Become really good at one or two counseling techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or the like.
