Tell us about your work---what do you do? I do management consulting for small and mid-sized business' in the areas of corporate finance , corporate strategy , and training and development . What skills are needed? You must have business school skills, people skills, and strong desire and aptitude for problem solving . What was your major? BBA in Finance and Insurance ; MBA in Corporate Finance and Corporate Strategy . How did you get started in your career? All of my previous experience gave me my skill set and I started consulting out of my home on a part-time basis. I am now doing it full-time. What experience do you need in this job? Banking , economic development , consulting, and corporate finance helped me develop my career. Describe your "typical" workday: My typical workday is about 12 to 16 hours long. Right now I am working on projects. So I confer with my employees, and work to meet my deadlines for deliverables. As I grow, I will move out of my home into an office suite and, hopefully, work fewer hours. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Self-motivation is required for a home-based business. Always remember that if you don't work, you don't eat. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Perfecting my consulting skills, learning, and growing is a lot of fun! I use everything I ever learned from my academic and professional experiences. The financial rewards are much greater than any job you could ever get. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Get an MBA, take courses from each discipline: Finance, Accounting. Strategy, International Business, Marketing, Quantitative Methods, Organization Behavior, Managerial Economics and Operations Management. Get relevant work experience that gives you different perspectives of business management issues.
