Tell us about your work---what do you do? As an accountant for a quick service restaurant company's corporate office, I help prepare Profit and Loss statements for the individual stores. I also am in charge of the accounting for all fixed assets related to the corporate office as well as to the stores. I also work as a liaison between corporate accounting and other departments at the corporate office to help them with budgeting. What skills are needed? Skills needed are: (1) people skills in order to work with the store owners/operators, (2) attention to detail in order to verify that all fixed assets are coded correctly and set up properly on the books for depreciation and tax purposes, (3) analytical and reasoning skills to read financial reports and determine any changes, differences, trends, etc., (4) leadership skills in order to advance in the accounting role and to help new accountants gain understanding of their job What was your major? Accounting How did you get started in your career? I attended an interview day held by the GSCPA's . Numerous companies attended and my company was one of them. I began the interview process with my company here and then continued contact with them until the job was offered. What experience do you need in this job? Some accountants start their career here with no other experience than a college degree in accounting. However, most have at least an internship in accounting. My experience included a 7-month internship in the accounting department of a large doctor's clinic as well as a 2.5-year internship with a small accounting firm. Describe your "typical" workday: My typical day is from 8:00-5:00 with tasks varying depending on what time of the month it is. The 1st -- 15th is normally spent on preparing P&L statements and the last half of the month I spend my days processing fixed assets and budgeting needs. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Determining priorities of work to be done, because there are always several tasks that need to be and you must decide what is most important. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Accomplishing a task which, looked hard to begin with, but with thought, planning, and hard work, could be completed. I always enjoy a good challenge. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Work at least one internship while in college, and if time and opportunity permits, work part time each semester in some type of accounting role.
