Ungerer, Tomi (Jean-Thomas Ungerer), 1931–2019, French author-illustrator and artist, b. Strasbourg, Alsace. He briefly attended the École des Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg, then traveled throughout Europe before moving to New York in 1956; he lived in Nova Scotia in the early 1970s before settling in Ireland in 1976. His first children's book, The Mellops Go Flying (1957), began his series of stories about a family of pigs. Crictor (1958), about a friendly boa constrictor, The Three Robbers (1963), and Moon Man (1966) have become children's classics. Ungerer also worked as a graphic designer and wrote adult erotica. His illustrated autobiography, Far Out Isn't Enough (1983), was made into a film in 2012. A museum devoted to his work is in Strasbourg.
