Further Sanctions Against Russia Being Discussed By EU

Monday, April 11, 2022 - The European Union is discussing further sanction packages to be levied against Russia, and the country and its military continue its invasion of Ukraine. According to the Danish Foreign Minister, Jeppe Kofod, several EU leaders have been building sanctions regarding oil and other economic deterrents.
This comes on the heels of Russia's brutal involvement in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, where the bodies of slain Ukrainian civilians have continued to be unearthed since Russian forces withdrew at the end of last week. Leaders of Ireland, Lithuania, and Denmark, among others, are involved with this next round of sanctions against Russia and hope the parameters placed on essential raw resources will promote the country's withdrawal from Ukraine without further violence.

Amazon Rainforest Reaches Dire New Record For Deforestation

Monday, April 11, 2022 - Brazil's Amazon rainforest has reached a sad milestone with the highest deforestation levels ever recorded. The country's National Institute for Space Research released findings that 363 square miles of trees and vegetation have been removed from the basin within the first three months of this year alone, which is the highest level of deforestation since the corporation's first study conducted in 2016.
As the largest remaining rainforest on the globe, the Amazon is responsible not only for air quality, water resources, and battling against global warming, but also provides a safe ecosystem and habitat for animals, insects, and plants alike that is essential for their continued survival. However, the security of the Amazon has been severely impacted since 2019 when President Jair Bolsonaro came into power, choosing instead to replace environmental safeguards with economical pursuits, leading in part to this unfortunate milestone.

Macron's Victory In Upcoming French Election Not A Done Deal

Monday, April 11, 2022 - As the French election for 2022 continues to gear up, current President Emmanuel Macron has his work cut out for him as he prepares to face off against his opponent from the 2017 elections, Marine Le Pen. Preliminary vote counts continue to be surprisingly neck-and-neck, which is a deviation from 2017 when Macron was able to wipe his competition off the electoral boards in a whirlwind victory.
After Macron's systematic disruption of the traditional voting system with two primary parties (the socialist left and conservative right) since the previous election, this year's results will be interesting not only for the present politics of France, but also for how the country handles legislative matters in the future. So far, Le Pen is a close second to Macron's votes, revealing that it's unlikely the French President faces another windfall this year.

Monday, April 18, 2022 - On Monday, Shanghai, the Chinese city of over 25 million people, announced its first deaths as a result of a rapid surge of a Covid-19 outbreak. The city stated that three people who were old and infected with COVID had died the previous day. The three reportedly had the infection with underlying conditions and they “deteriorated into severe cases after going into hospital, and died after all efforts to revive them proved ineffective,” the city said in an official social media account.
Out of the three, two were women aged 89 and 91, while the third was a 91-year-old man. Their deaths were confirmed by the municipal health commission. These are the first deaths to happen in the city where the Covid outbreak led to the implementation of severe lockdown measures which have dragged on for weeks now, resulting in widespread anger and rare protests across the city.

Monday, April 11, 2022 - Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister has offered what in his words, was a "wholehearted" apology for attending a party during the lockdown, an act which is illegal but insisted that he did not intentionally break any rules or mislead the Parliament. Johnson has also dismissed calls for him to resign.
He has also repeatedly denied breaking any rules in Downing Street to the Common, but the Scotland Yard put paid to that by confirming that parties which breached lockdown laws took place in No 10 and other parts of White hall. The opposition party, Labour, has pushed for the matter to be closely examined, given a ministerial code which unanimously states that any breach or break-in rules should result in resignation by the offender.

China Condemns Blast In Pakistan That Killed Three Chinese Tutors

Wednesday, April 27, 2022 - An attack in Pakistan that killed three Chinese nationals has been condemned by the nation that has also demanded that Islamabad fight against those involved. The three Chinese tutors and a Pakistani driver were killed in a suicide bombing near Karachi University's Confucius Institute on Tuesday and the separatist Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) said it carried out the attack. Confucius Institutes are a key part of China's soft diplomacy strategies across the world.
A long-time ally and key investor in the country, China is heavily involved in large development projects across Pakistan but the BLA, which is banned in Pakistan, has strongly opposed the Chinese investment in the country, saying locals do not benefit. The saddening incident poses a critical challenge for the freshly installed government after weeks of political turmoil in the country.
