6: Allen Funt, creator and host of Candid Camera, dies of complications of a 1993 stroke. He was 84. The show, a CBS hit from 1960 to 1966, was originally created by Funt as a radio show, moved to television in 1948, and has appeared on all three major networks.; The London Sunday Times reports that Steven Spielberg will take over Stanley Kubrick's unfinished film, A.I., a sci-fi film about a âyoung robot boy.â Kubrick died unexpectedly in March.

9: Lauryn Hill cleans up at the 9/9/99 MTV Video Music Awards, taking home four Moon Man trophies, including Best Female Video, Video of the Year, and Best R&B Video for âDoo Wop (That Thing).â Crowd favorite Fatboy Slim nabbed a surprising three awards (Breakthrough Video, Best Choreography in a Video, and Best Direction in a Video) for his âPraise You.â For a full list of winners, see MTV Video Awards; Virgin Records announces that The Smashing Pumpkins bassist, D'Arcy Wretzky, has left the band. No reason was given. âThe Smashing Pumpkins will continue as a band and will tour in support of the new record,â Virgin Records said in a statement.; Independent distributor Lions Gate Entertainment Group agrees to release and promote Kevin Smith's controversial film, Dogma. Miramax, owned by Walt Disney Co., originally planned to release the film but decided against it to avoid scandal. Miramax co-chairmen, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, bought rights to the film and then sought outside distributors. The film stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as fallen angels who try to reenter heaven, thus proving the infallibility of God.

10: Actress Juliette Lewis has apparently gotten over former squeeze Brad Pitt. She announces that she and professional skateboarder Steve Berra have married.

11: Bubbly blond actress Jenny McCarthy marries director John Asher at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

12: David E. Kelley wins big at the 51st Annual Emmy Awards, taking top comedy and drama honors for Ally McBeal and The Practice, respectively. Dennis Franz wins Best Actor in a drama for N.Y.P.D. Blue and Edie Falco takes the trophy for HBO's critically acclaimed The Sopranos. In the comedy category, John Lithgowand Helen Hunt won acting awards for 3rd Rock from the Sun and Mad about You. 17: Helena Bonham Carter confirms that she and longtime boyfriend, Kenneth Branagh, have split up. The two began dating shortly after actor-director Branagh and Emma Thompson divorced.; Janet Jackson's on board to play Eddie Murphy's love interest in the sequel to The Nutty Professor. This is her second feature film; she starred opposite Tupac Shakurin the 1993 film Poetic Justice.

22: Film, theater, television acting legend George C. Scott dies from a ruptured abdominal aneurysm. He was 71. While he won several awards, including Obies, Emmys, and Golden Globes, he will long be remembered for turning down the best-actor Oscar for his 1970 title-role performance in Patton. Though he will likely be best remembered for his film roles, Scott performed best on stage. He was acclaimed for his Shakespeare performances, which include Richard III and As You Like It. His other films include Malice and Dr. Strangelove.

24: ABC announces plans to reprise the summer hit Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for the November sweeps. The prime-time game show will run on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays from Nov. 7 through Nov. 21.

29: Warren Beatty tells the Southern California Chapter of the Americans for Democratic Action that he hasn't ruled out running for president. While accepting the group's Eleanor Roosevelt Award âfor a lifetime of creative and political integrity,â the actor-director-producer said he thinks Democratic contenders Vice President Al Gore and former Senator Bill Bradley are too moderate.

30: In the November issue of Talk magazine, Arnold Schwarzenegger reveals that he's considering a run for governor of California in 2002. The Republican said, âThe possibility is there because I feel it inside. I feel there are a lot of people standing still and not doing enough. And there's a vacuum.â He's married to Maria Shriver, who's mother is a sister to Democrats Sen. Edward Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy.
