Critically maligned as “Nirvanawannabes,” Bush nevertheless sold more than six million copies of their U.S. debut in 1994 and continued the trend with this follow-up. The British band, powered by camera-friendly vocalist Gavin Rossdale, has proved to be quite capable of crafting guitar-driven, highly melodic singles like this album's stinging tale of desperation “Swallowed.” Yet with a few notable exceptions (such as the string-tinged, quietly weird “Straight No Chaser”), the rest of the album often sounds uninspired and very derivative. Bush's sales figures are tough to ignore, but they've yet to prove they're in it for the long run.
