Kaleidoscope

The young pianist's latest album has many of the ingredients essential to good jazz. First, it features some of the best current talent, including Stanley Turrentine and Antonio Hart on reeds, Ron Carter on bass, Lewis Nash on drums and no slouch himself, Benny Green on piano. Second, the great majority of the tracks, all of them penned and arranged by Green, are worthy of repeated listening. “Thursday's Lullaby” and “Patience,” for example, are moody, cerebral ballads that illustrate the pianist's elegant technique as well as his strong sense of composition. On other tracks, like the two versions of “Kaleidoscope,” “The Sexy Mex” and “Central Park South,” Green and his cohorts swing intelligently. Though Kaleidoscope isn't perfect, as it occasionally goes flat on tracks like “Apricot,” it remains a fine example of contemporary jazz.
