Much like The Proprietor, Unhook the Stars emerges as a vehicle for an aging legend and leaves plot and development in need of attention. When her rough-at-the-edges, tattooed daughter, Ann Mary Margaret (Kelly), storms out of her house spewing profanity and insults, Mildred (Rowlands) solves her loneliness problem by volunteering to care for her neighbor's 6-year-old son (Lloyd). The neighbor, Monica (Tomei), a recently separated working mother, needs some maternal guidance and gets it from Mildred. Monica introduces Mildred to her friends, and trucker Big Tommy (Depardieu) falls for the much older Mildred. It's been a long time since Mildred has been kissed, but sensitive, yet hulking, Tommy understands. None of the emotions are fully explored, leaving many unanswered questions.
