Sylvester Stallone returns to the big screen for the first time in three years with Get Carter. It's a remake of the '70s thriller starring Michael Caine as a seedy gangster that aspires toward homage, but belongs in the category of Mel Gibson's recent Payback. Much like the Gibson vehicle,Get Carter clothes its star in bruised blues and grays and a dreary, pointless script involving vengeance, thugs, prostitutes, and grimy action.

Stallone is Jack Carter, a Las Vegas strong-arm who heads to Seattle when his estranged brother dies under mysterious circumstances. Here Carter probes a nasty underworld (Mickey Rourke, Alan Cumming, Michael Caine) in quest of the dirty truth. When probing fails, he punches. Or stabs. Or shoots.

Get Carter is largely indecipherable. Although the script was written by David McKenna (of American History X), it is filled with the holes and bromide-stained laziness of a B-grade flick.
