Fastball
The Harsh Light of Day
- Hollywood
If you're feeling overrun by all the teen pop and hip-hop on the airwaves of late, hold on—help is on the way for your rock 'n' roll heart.
Fastball's new album is packed with high-energy, richly melodic songs played by a band that's into crunching guitars and throttling big beats. Miles Zuniga, Tony Scalzo, and Joey Shuffield kick this set into overdrive early on, with the power pop single "You're An Ocean," which features Zuniga's blistering guitar work set against the pounding piano of guest Billy Preston.
The Texas trio's equally at ease latching onto the hook of "Goodbye," the Beatles-by-way-of Cheap Trick-flavored rockers "Morning Star" and "Don't Give Up On Me," and the harmony-tinged "Dark Street." These guys can really play, and thankfully make no apologies for it. The Harsh Light of Day is a blessed relief from a lot of what's dominating the charts.
