Batman & Robin
Warner Bros.
We don't see Batman movies for plot and character development. We go for the gadgetry and gimmicks. Batman & Robin delivers both at a furious pace, but uninspired, lackluster performances wear down the dazzling effects. Clooney makes a charming, nice-guy Batman, but wears the same ironic smirk whether engaging in derring-do or comforting a stricken Alfred (Gough). Schwarzenegger, looking a lot like Mr. Clean and sounding a lot like, well, Schwarzenegger, oddly has the best lines (the worst ones, too) as Mr. Freeze, a villain who's out to put the chill on Gotham. Thurman is the high point of the film as vampy Poison Ivy, a botanist zealot who wants to exterminate all animal life. She teams up with Mr. Freeze to battle the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder (O'Donnell). Hmm, did Ivy consider plants can't live in arctic climates?
