Samuel Isaac HOPKINS, Congress, VA (1843-1914)
HOPKINS Samuel Isaac , a Representative from Virginia; born near Owensville, Prince George's County, Md., December 12, 1843; moved to Anne Arundel County with his parents, who settled near Annapolis; attended the common schools and was graduated from Owensville Academy; enlisted in Company A, Second Regiment, Maryland Confederate Infantry, during the Civil War and served until he was severely wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg; after the war settled in Lynchburg, Va., and engaged in mercantile pursuits; elected as a candidate of the Labor Party to the Fiftieth Congress (March 4, 1887-March 3, 1889); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1888; resumed mercantile pursuits in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Va., and died there January 15, 1914; interment in Spring Hill Cemetery.
