Age: 79commercial artist and ad executive who is widely credited with creating the smiley face, the symbol that has been emblazoned on everything from clothing to postage stamps. Ball crafted the bright yellow icon for a Massachusetts insurance company, which paid Ball $45. He never trademarked the icon.
