(Joseph) Lane Kirkland
Age: 77president of the AFL–CIO from 1979 to 1995. As head of the federation, Kirkland fought to sustain the unions' waning power, in part by bringing renegades such as the U.A.W. and the Teamsters back into the fold. “All sinners belong in the church,” he said.
