The Question:
For the Paralympic Games, do the athletes all get like a standard prosthetic? They're starting up soon. I remember a bunch of chatter online about prosthetic legs giving people and advantage in running. But obviously that's not everyone with prosthetic legs. Do the Olympics regulate people's stuff or do people with more expensive equipment have the advantage?
The Answer:
Yes and no. Just like any other athletes, Paralympic athletes have their own preferences and experiences to take into consideration. Athletes can use a range of equipment and tech to assist them at the Games. But, as they touch on here in the official policy, there are standards in place to prevent rich athletes from unfairly dominating. The equipment an athlete brings can't be expensive beyond the point that most athletes could reasonably attain it. The goal is to create a level playing field without putting an undue (or even counterproductive) burden on the competitors.-The Editors
